Joe Stanyner

2v Geodesic Silo Dome "Super Hubs Kit" for Building Bamboo Domes

Hello John,

as you can see, we finally got the dome erected. Due to the increase in size, it was quite challenging....I quickly realised that we couldn't do it without scaffolding, and so we improvised with large bamboo poles, 100 pesos each!

Some of the first tier triangles are leaning out at the top. We are trying to remedy this by pushing in and tightening the zipties.

Does it matter if the frame "bulges" here and there?

There are more pics / videos on fb: Stanyer Farms. There will be further pics after covering.

Cheers, Joe

Hello John,

I managed to get some Lock Channel / Wiggly Wire which is the industry standard for attaching plastic films to greenhouse frames.

I then encountered several problems. The horizontal struts were not straight, some were wobbly, and difficult to attach square channel to round bamboo. I think that you will like the solution.

I designed some simple brackets to sit on the hubs. The brackets are bolted to 2x2" lumber which just sits inside the hub. My original idea was to bolt the channels directly to the brackets, but I could see that the channels were not rigid enough.

So I used the same High Tensile 2" Flat Bar ( used for brackets) to make a steel belt around the second tier of hubs. The channels bolted and riveted to flat bar were quite rigid, further strengthened by zipties around the struts.

Hope to get the cover on soon, additional plastic due on Sunday.

Cheers, Joe

PS the 2" flat bar is surprisingly cheap (and lightweight) 400Pesos for 6 m length.

Hello John,

The cover is on at last. The plastic is not very elegant, but firmly attached.

There is a central roof vent bordered by a pentagon of 1.5m channel lock.

I look forward to your comments.

I think that for residential / amenity uses, we need to come up with a "tailor made" cover....maybe from China?

Cheers, Joe

Hello Malcolm, John,

with the scaffolding removed, you can now see the scale of it.

One thing surprised me...there is hardly any plastic flap....almost silent.

We have some storms forcast in next few weeks, which will be interesting.

The Channel Lock has done a super job of securing the cover

Cheers for now, Joe
